Beach Beach Beach

Saturday, December 22nd, 2012 – Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

On Saturday, Aimee and I went to the markets in Nampo.   I think it is about time I go somewhere new but this time I had a little list of things I wanted to buy at the markets. We went for the afternoon and came home on time for dinner.  The actual markets were not as crowded this weekend so I actually had a chance to take in the sights and orient myself.  The first couple of times I went, I was following other people around and paying attention so I didn’t run into people or get run over by a motorbike.  This time I was the leader and I could actually see the markets for what they were for the first time and get a better sense of the layout and where we were going.  Also I got a better idea of the magnitude of these markets and how they are some people’s source for survival.

Anyone need an umbrella?

Kimchi Please!  Many varieties of Kimchi (which is eaten with almost every meal)

I bought some warm leggings, an extra scarf, some Christmas lights to decorate my room, a couple of cards and some small Christmas presents.  Mission completed, Aimee bought the items she was seeking out as well.  We also had some fun going into a few random shops and trying some samples.

On Sunday, I was determined to finally see the beach properly.  I went to Aimee’s apartment and we made a little fruit salad to bring as a beach snack.  I also had an extra comforter in my apartment so I brought that to be our beach blanket.  We braved the chilly air, sniffed in the sea air and embraced the beautiful views of the coast.  After our snack, we left the blanket for a while to walk along the beach for a little while.  Along the way, we ran into Santa and his reindeer on the side of the road.  Christmas is not a huge holiday in Korea so seeing Korean volunteers dressed up for the holiday giving out little candy packets really raised both of our spirits!
