Las Fallas in Valencia 2017

Las Fallas 2017

Every year, there is a big festival called Las Fallas in a coastal city called Valencia.  Traditionally, it started because one man suggested the people burn all of the leftover wood from the winter to celebrate the arrival of spring.  From there, it has escalated to different groups of people building sculptures made of different flammable materials including wood, and explosives.  The city spends over a million euros in total and the entire year preparing, just so that they can burn down every sculpture on the last day of the festival.  The sculptures are spread out throughout the city and there is a winner each year that is supposed to be burned last.

Every day of the festival at 2pm there is an event called mascleta that involves lighting firecrackers for a ten minute duration, producing a giant cloud of smoke and intense noise.
